If you have a disability, there are federal and provincial programs to provide financial support, services, and accommodations.

Financial Benefits

CPP Disability Benefit — Monthly payment (up to ~$1,606/month) for people who contributed to CPP but can no longer work due to severe and prolonged disability. Must be under 65. Apply through Service Canada (1-800-277-9914). Canada Disability Benefit — New federal benefit providing up to $200/month for low-income working-age adults with disabilities. Requires a Disability Tax Credit certificate. Payments started July 2025.

Provincial Programs

Disability Support Program — Support for adults 19+ with intellectual disabilities, long-term mental illness, or physical disabilities. Includes residential support, day programs, respite care, and individualized funding. Call 1-877-424-1177.

Transportation

Halifax Transit Access-A-Bus — Door-to-door accessible transit for people who cannot use conventional transit. Call 902-490-4000.

How do I apply for CPP Disability in Nova Scotia?
Apply through Service Canada at 1-800-277-9914. You need your SIN and a medical report from your doctor (Form ISP-2519). You must have contributed to CPP and have a severe and prolonged disability that prevents you from working.
